Can You Call These Numbers with a Travel eSIM?

Most travel eSIMs are data-only — they do NOT support regular phone calls or SMS. This means you cannot directly dial 110, 120, 119, or embassy numbers using an eSIM.

How to call emergency numbers with a data-only eSIM:

  • Ask someone nearby — any Chinese person can dial 110/120/119 for you for free
  • Use Wi-Fi Calling — if your home carrier supports it, enable Wi-Fi Calling to make calls over the internet using your regular phone number
  • Use VoIP apps — WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, or WeChat voice calls work over data
  • Ask hotel staff — they can call emergency services or your embassy for you
💡
Pro Tip

Best practice: Keep your home SIM card in your phone (or enable international roaming) as a backup for emergency calls. You can use both your home SIM for calls and your eSIM for data simultaneously on most dual-SIM phones.
