π‘ Insider Tips
Pace yourself with Yum Cha
Morning tea (Yum Cha) is a slow, social affair for locals. Take your time, sip tea, and order dishes in batches rather than all at once.
Prepare for the humidity
Guangzhou has a subtropical climate. Summers (May to September) are intensely hot and humid. Dress in light layers and stay hydrated.
Visit the Canton Fair (or avoid it)
The Canton Fair in April and October brings massive crowds and spikes hotel prices. If you're not attending, avoid traveling during these months.
Combine with Hong Kong/Macau
Guangzhou is just a 1-hour high-speed train ride from Hong Kong (West Kowloon) and very close to Macau, making it a perfect starting or ending point for a southern China trip.
