๐ What to Eat
Hainan Chicken Rice (Wenchang Chicken)
The dish that Singapore made famous โ but it started here. Free-range Wenchang chicken poached at precise temperature, served with rice cooked in chicken fat, and three dipping sauces (ginger, chili, soy). Simple but sublime when done right.

Seafood at First Market
Buy live seafood at Sanya's First Market (็ฌฌไธๅธๅบ), then take it to one of the nearby processing restaurants that will cook it your way for ยฅ10โ20 per dish. Pick your fish, crab, or shrimp from the tanks โ it doesn't get fresher than this.
Price: ยฅ80โ150 per person
Coconut Chicken Hot Pot
Chicken simmered in fresh coconut water โ sweet, light, and refreshing, nothing like heavy mainland hot pots. The broth is drinkable on its own. A Hainan original that's perfect after a beach day.

๐ก Insider Tips
Avoid Chinese New Year at all costs
Sanya is the #1 domestic winter escape โ during Spring Festival (Jan/Feb), hotel prices triple, beaches are packed, and everything books out weeks ahead. November and December are the sweet spot.
Stay in Yalong Bay, not Sanya Bay
Yalong Bay has the best beach, clearest water, and best resorts. Sanya Bay is closer to the airport but the water is murky. Dadonghai is a middle ground โ decent beach, more affordable.
Book Wuzhizhou ferry in advance
The island limits daily visitors and ferry tickets sell out fast, especially on weekends. Book on Trip.com or WeChat at least 1 day ahead. Morning ferries (8โ9 AM) have the calmest water for snorkeling.
Don't miss the duty-free shopping
Sanya has China's largest offshore duty-free mall (CDF Mall). Visitors leaving Hainan can buy tax-free โ cosmetics, liquor, and luxury goods at 10โ30% off. Bring your passport and departure ticket.
